Levi Powell

Levi Powell, 64, of Morganton, NC went to his Heavenly home on Saturday, October 5, 2013 surrounded by his family and friends. Born August 21, 1949 in Avery County, NC, he was a son of the late Ivey Andrew Powell and Mae Stewart Powell Maloney. Levi was an active member of El Bethel Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and was one of the forerunners of foreign missions. He was a member and supporter of Gideons International for several years. Levi owned and operated Powell Plumbing for 30 years, and retired from Foothills Correctional. With a positive outlook on life, Levi inspired and changed the lives of many people.He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy Forbes Powell of the home; children, Kay Powell Clark and husband, Kevin, Nathan Powell, and Robbie Stamey and wife, Angel, all of Morganton; grandchildren, Sam and Hannah Clark, Elijah Stamey, Miranda Stephens and husband, Grant, Nathan Moses, and Logan Moses; siblings, Sput Powell and wife, Barbara, and Barbara Powell Stamey, all of Morganton; several nieces and nephews; step-father, Ernest Maloney of Morganton; and John Shockley and wife, Nanette, close friends that Levi called family.In addition to his parents, Levi was preceded in death by an infant sister, Katie Mae Powell.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at El Bethel Baptist Church with the Reverends Ron Cooper, Justin Cunningham, and Karl Minor officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Corrections officers from the NC Department of Corrections will be honor guards for the services. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 until 8 pm at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
