Louis Atlee Brinkley passed away peacefully on June 9th, after 81 years of a blessed and abundant life, one to truly celebrate. Born on New Year’s Day 1934, he was the son of the late Atlee and Muriel Brinkley. Other than college, and two years in the Army, Louis spent his life in Morganton. At an early age, he developed a love for cars, model airplanes and hunting and fishing. He was fortunate to parlay his love into a business, the “Hobby Shop,” that brought 38 years of wonderful memories to him and his family. Many kids as well enjoyed the Hobby Shop years either as summer employees, racing slot cars on Friday nights or choosing from a large selection of toys and trains particularly during the Christmas season. It was also a great gathering place where many a tall fishing tale was shared. Louis loved to fish. His son was fortunate to spend many quality hours on Lake James with him, and his daughter and grandsons have many fond memories all fishing together in the surf at North Myrtle Beach. And he was blessed to share these memories and so many more with his wife of 53 years.
Louis was a graduate of Presbyterian College and a member of The First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn. He is survived by his wife, Becky; his son, Greg, and his wife, Kay, of Charlotte; his daughter, Lisa, and her husband, Eric, of Morganton; grandsons Landon, Jackson and Walt; and one great-grandson, Drake.
A celebration of his life will be held at First United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 13th, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation to follow the service. Louis’ ashes will be scattered across one of his favorite fishing spots on Lake James. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The First United Methodist Church of Morganton or Burke Hospice and Palliative Care. The family would like to thank the nurses, CNAs and Dr. Goudas for their compassionate care. They are truly God’s earthly angels.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
