Mable Hardin Abernathy

Mable Hardin Abernathy, 96, of Morganton died Monday, March 21, 2016. Born December 14, 1919 in Burke County, NC, she was a daughter of the late George Washington Hardin and Zora Mull Hardin. She was employed at Shadowline for 29 years until her retirement in 1979. Mable was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Prentis Abernathy; daughters, Barbara Abernathy Gragg of Morganton and Helen Abernathy Jerrels of Illinois; sisters, June Hardin Stephens and Carrie Hardin; brother, Charlie Hardin; half-brothers, Joseph, Robie, Odie, and James Hardin; and half-sister, Pearlie Katherine Hardin.
Surviving are grandsons, Randy and Chris Gragg of Morganton, and Gerald Luster of Roland Park, KS; a number of great grandchildren; and a nephew, Ted Lane of Morganton.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. The funeral will follow at 4:00 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Ron Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
