Maj. Charles E. "Box" Hallyburton, Sr., (U.S. Army retired), 74, of Morganton died Wednesday, September 25, 2013. He was born in Burke County on September 21, 1939 and was a son of the late Jay Vance Hallyburton and Pearl Sides Hallyburton. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict and retired with a rank of Major from the U. S. Armed Forces in 1999. Major Hallyburton was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division, of Ft. Bragg, the First Calvary Assoc., Combat Infantrymen Assoc., and the National Guard Bureau. He was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans, and the American Legion. He was also owner and operator of Hallyburton Plumbing and Heating.Surviving are his children, Chuck Hallyburton of Morganton, Sissy Hallyburton of Hickory, and Karen Hallyburton Kelly and her husband, Frank, of Tybee Island, SC; grandchildren, Joshua David Watts, Wendy Watts Hicks; Ashley Nicole Abernathy, Stephen Ray Burns, Jacob Ryan Burns, and Sidney Jay Hallyburton; great-grandchildren, Tinity Jo Watts and Alainah Rose Hicks; and a number of nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.The family will receive friends at Sossoman Funeral Home from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, September 29, 2013. Committal services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain with Rev. Joshua Watts and Rev. Charlie Crump officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the NC National Guard Honor Guard.
