Margaret Collier Sellers, 93, of Morganton, NC passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 11, 2015 and is now with her Lord and Savior. Born in Johnston County, NC on September 30, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Bertie R. Collier and Mary Bass Collier. Margaret was a very active member of First Baptist Church. In 1967, she helped create the First Baptist Church Kindergarten and Pre-School programs and was the director for over 20 years. She also taught children’s Sunday school, helped with the children's choirs, visited the home-bound members, and made the Communion bread for many years. Mrs. Sellers was an excellent seamstress who created everything from clothing to home décor items. She was especially fond of making costumes and special clothing for her granddaughter’s dolls and stuffed animals. She was devoted to her family, and with her compassion and generosity she inspired and touched many lives. Margaret had a loving heart that made her a wonderful mother. Mrs. Sellers especially enjoyed playing bridge with her close friends. She had many interests and hobbies throughout her life. She volunteered at COMMA, was a member of Morganton Women's Club, and served as president for the Burke County Chapter of AARP in 1994.
Mrs. Sellers is survived by her daughters, Vicki S. Canipe of Drexel, NC and Valerie Sellers of Morganton; a granddaughter, Meagan Canipe; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Parrish. She is also survived by many nephews, nieces and friends who adored her.
In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Leonard Sellers, Jr.; a daughter, Sharon C. Sellers; brothers, James I. Collier, Clyde Collier, Toye Collier, James N. Collier, Mayo Collier, and Curtis Collier; and sisters, Ethel Tyson, Effie Williams, Mary H. Collier, Mary Green, Alma Robertson, and Josephine Aycock.
The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m., Saturday, October 17, 2015 at First Baptist Church. The funeral will be held at the church at 2 p.m. with Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.
The family would like to especially thank Helen Bryant for her care and compassion toward our mother.
