Maria Boersma Joy

Maria Boersma Joy, 66, of Morganton, NC died Friday, January 7, 2011 at the Burke Palliative Care Center. Born in the Netherlands on October 11, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Otte Boersma and Margarete Marta Gotz Boersma. Maria was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. She retired from Conoco in August of 1999 after 38 years of employment. While employed with Conoco she majored in business at the University of Houston and attended Penn State in a compressed semester for Conoco Executives. Maria’s career with Conoco included Director of Downstream Communications, Director of Training, Director of Consumer Affairs, Assistant to General Manager of Wholesale and Retail Marketing, Sales Development Manager and Transportation Support Staff.Maria is survived by her husband, Gary Dean Joy of the home; siblings, Elfie Boersma, Otte Boersma, Andre Boersma, Anne Marie Foley, Marianne Moulton, Jos Boersma, Ingrid Boersma, Allert Boersma, Marta Ostrom, and Frans Boersma; and a number of nephews and nieces.A memorial service for Maria will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 14, 2011 at Grace Episcopal Church with Rev. Bruce Walker officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parish hall following the service. Sossoman Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.
