Marshall Eugene "Gene" Black, 68, of Duckworth Circle, Morganton, NC died Monday, April 23, 2007, at his residence after a long but courageous battle with heart disease. Born in Burke County, NC on Nov. 13, 1938, he was a son of the late Lester Marshall Black and Ruby Hudson Black. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Oak Forest United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Addie Black.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Betty Lanning Black of the home; sons and their wives, Bryan and Marla Black and Jason and Melissa Black all of Morganton; grandchildren, Sara Black, Catherine Black, and Ashton Nicole Black all of Morganton; three nieces, a nephew, and many friends.
The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2007 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with the Rev. Rod Randolph officiating. Entombment will follow at Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum with military honors by Valdese American Legion Post 234. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour before the funeral.
