Martha Dickens Harvey

Martha Dickens Harvey, 86, of Granite Falls, NC, went to be with her Lord and family on Thursday, May 5, 2022.

Born in Wake County, NC on January 30, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Alvin Johnston Dickens and Hattie Pauline Mullis Dickens.

Martha attended First Baptist Church in Morganton for many years.  She graduated from the Appalachian State Teachers College and worked for the Indiana School for the Deaf and the North Carolina School for the Deaf.  She retired from Burke County Schools in 1996 as a speech pathologist.

Martha volunteered at Grace Hospital and CoMMA, and she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.  She was a founder and original member of the Anchor Club at Morganton High School, was a past member of the Morganton Pilot Club, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in NC and NJ, and was a past president of the local chapter of the Classroom Teachers Association.

A loving mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother, Martha is survived by her son, Major Andrew S. Harvey US Army, Retired, and wife, Denise; grandchildren, Stephen Lee Harvey, Matthew Andrew Harvey, and Daniel Scott Harvey; brothers, Al J. Dickens, Jr. and Major Henry Dickens USMC Retired; sister-in-law, Linda Dickens; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by a brother, John Dickens; and former husband, William Harvey.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 21, 2022 in the parlor of First Baptist Church.  The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the church’s chapel with Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating.  Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
