Mary Etta Pittillo, 74, of Morganton, NC passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2014. Born in Burke County, NC on October 11, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Andrew Carswell and Mary Rotis Poteet Carswell. Mary Etta was a member of Catawba Valley Baptist Church and was a former member of Burkemont Baptist Church. She retired from the Burke County School System and was the first lady to serve as a county commissioner.
A loving mother and wife, Mary Etta is survived by her husband, Connell S. Pittillo of the home; children, Lisa Pittillo Martinez and her husband, Joseph A. Martinez, of Valdese and Jeffery Wayne Pittillo and his wife, Jenelyn Bigcas Pittillo, of Morganton; grandchildren, Charles A. Pittillo, Anthony J. Martinez, Deobrah C. Thayer, Katie Pittillo Russ, and Connell R. Pittillo; a great-grandson, Xander A. Martinez; brothers, Pee Wee Carswell and Gray Carswell; and sisters, Elva Digh and Bertina Seagle.
In addition to her parents, Mary Etta was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Jr., Leonard, Nun, and J.D. Carswell; and a sister, Azalie Brittain.
The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, November 13, 2014 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center with the Rev. Curtis Sides officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
