Mary Jane Carter Henderson died at her home in Morganton, her hometown, on Friday, Aug. 25. She was 80.
She was born Nov. 24, 1936, to the late Clara May Carter and Robert Henry Carter. Her brother, Robert Henry Carter Jr., was killed in Vietnam in 1969.
Mary Jane is survived by her husband of 44 years, Bobby Lawrence Henderson. Her other survivors include daughter Debra Jane Harper and husband Dan of Durham, stepdaughter Patricia Ann Henderson of Morganton and stepson Bruce Henderson and wife Lynn of Davidson; granddaughter Kathryn Leigh Harper and fiancé Paul Spellings; sister-in-law Norma Shuping and husband Tom; nephew Dixon Carter and wife Susan and daughter Shannon; niece Cherie Brandt and husband Jay and children Devon and Monya.
Mary Jane was a member of First Baptist Church and the Agape Sunday School class.
She worked in X-ray technology at the old Grace Hospital in Morganton and for a few years at the new hospital. She trained at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. She was active in the North Carolina Society of Radiologic Technologists and served a term as president. The society honored her with a life membership in 1984.
Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m., both at First Baptist Church. Memorials in lieu of flowers should be made to the Local Benevolence Fund of First Baptist Church.
