Mary Jo Harris

Mary Jo Harris, 92, of Morganton, NC went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 5, 2016.  Born in Burke County, NC on May 21, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Crump and Annie Wilma Williams Crump Baker and her husband, Walter.  Mary Jo was the last remaining charter member of Grandview Baptist Church.  Her husband was pastor of the church for 36 years and she taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir, and taught Bible school.  She was extremely devoted to her church and family, and she was an expert cook and baker.

Mary Jo is survived by her son, Robert Wayne Harris of Morganton; a daughter, Betty Jo Harris Whisnant of Morganton; grandchildren, Janice Diab, Jerri Cook, the Rev. John L. Whisnant, Jr. and his wife, Suzi, Jeffrey Whisnant and his wife, Susan, and Rob Harris and his wife, Melissa; and great-grandchildren, Caleb Whisnant, Elizabeth Whisnant, Austin Whisnant, Ethan Whisnant, Lindsay Harris, and Evan Diab.

In addition to her parents, Mary Jo was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Robert Lee Harris; a daughter, Rama Harris; a son-in-law, John L. Whisnant; brothers, Frank and David Crump; step-brothers, Arthur and Ernest Baker; and step-sisters, Lillie Benge and Carrie Clark.

The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m., Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Grandview Baptist Church.  The funeral will be held at the church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Whisnant, Jr. and the Rev. Kenneth Baker officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
