Mary Pitts Chapman, 72, of Morganton, NC, went to her heavenly home on Thursday, March 27, 2025.
Born in Burke County, NC on July 16, 1952, she was the daughter of the late Roy Edmonson Pitts and Mattie Geneva Watson Pitts.
Mary was a member of Nowlings Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, where she was a member of the women’s auxiliary, taught Bible school, and sang in the choir. She was also a former member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. Mrs. Chapman retired from Leviton.
Mary was a loving and caring mother, MawMaw, and sister. She loved to dance, create flower arrangements, fish, and cook for her family.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Roy Leonard Chapman (Kelly); son-in-law, Chuck Davis; grandchildren, Tyler Davis (Lauren), Lawson Davis (Emily), Tanner Chapman, Connor Chapman, and Gavin Chapman; great-grandchildren, Emma Kate, Jameson, Ivy, and Amelia; sister, Ida Pitts Price; sister-in-law, Jeannette Fisher (Vernon); and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Verlin Eugene Chapman; daughter, Melissa Davis; brother, Jimmy Ray Pitts; and brother-in-law, Gary Price.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Darvy Hensley and Rev Bobby Shehan officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Via Hospice.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Mary was an absolute joy and light in all corners of the world in which she occupied. Plain and simple she loved life, she loved her family, and she loved to laugh any chance she could! She was an amazing Mawmaw and I know that her family will be missing her tremendously. She was the light that we all needed in a world often filled with darkness. Mary Chapman was one of My favorite Residents at Cambridge House. I would help her in all kinds of ways, and do stuff for her. She was a loving person and she told me that I was always so nice to her. It's the passion that I had for those residents. I cared about each and every one of them. I would sit sometimes and just had short conversations with her. She would always talk about Her Family and her Friends. Mary Chapman will and always be missed.

I had the pleasure of caring for this sweet lady, and not a moment was dull. She made everyone smile and me even more with her funny jokes. She could make me smile no matter how bad of a day I was having! I'm definitely going to miss her! And not to mention all the gifts Roy and Kelly would spoil me with, when they came to see her every day! She raised a great kid and taught him how to choose the right woman for his wife! I love you guys and pray for comfort through this tough time!
