Mary Tate Greene

Mary Tate Greene, 93, of Grace Ridge Retirement Community died Friday, July 16, 2010 following a period of declining health. She was born in McDowell County on August 12, 1916 and was a daughter of the late E. M. and Margaret Stepp Tate. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Greene was preceded in death by her husband, Hershal F. Greene, her loving step-mother, Addie Quinn Tate, and by brothers, Locke Tate and Murray Tate, Jr.She graduated from Pleasant Gardens High School in Marion, NC and from General Hospital School of Nursing in Knoxville, TN. Mary spent most of her career at Broughton Hospital and retired in 1976 as Superintendant of Nursing. Mary was a long time member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church and was involved in much charitable work following her retirement.

Surviving are her sons and their wives, Ralph and Sandra Greene of Longwood, FL, Sherrill and Quinn Greene of Ft. Myers, FL, and George and Julie Greene of Hampton, VA; brothers, Roy Tate of New Port Ritchey, FL and John Tate of Newton, NC; a sister, Stella Marlowe of Marion; a sister-in-law, Mildred Tate of Pleasant Gardens; nine grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren.A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Burke Memorial Park with Rev. Allen Boliek officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Sossoman Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 201 Shady Rest Rd., Morganton, NC 28655.
