Master Chief Thomas W. Jarrell, USN Retired, 94, of Morganton, NC, died Wednesday, January 3, 2024.
Born in Surry County, NC on June 15, 1929, he was the son of the late Hiram Chester Jarrell and Lou Alene Nichols Jarrell.
Tom was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. He was an avid fan of college sports and of the Tar Heels. He waited every year for a 4th of July celebration enjoying fireworks, but his favorite 4th of July would include the Blue Angels.
Mr. Jarrell was a retired US Navy veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He served in Japan and Hawaii and had served as chief of base in Iceland.
Mr. Jarrell is survived by his daughters, Tammy Carpenter and husband, Mark, and Pamela Holland; grandchildren, Jordan Gibson, Logan Carpenter, Payton Holland, and Trefton Holland; and a sister, Almaree Shattuck.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by wife of 64 years, Doris “Jean” Garrison Jarrell; brother, Hiram Chester Jarrell, Jr.; and a sister, Annie Lee Steven.
The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m., Monday, January 8, 2024 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The graveside will follow at 2 p.m. at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors provided by the US Navy and American Legion Hickory Post #48.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
