Mattie Joyce Poteat, 91 of Morganton, NC passed away, Wednesday, March 5, 2025. Born on January 5, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Marshall Smith and Beulah Smith. Mattie was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She enjoyed the springtime, her flowers, being outdoors, gardening, feeding the birds, genealogy, and listening to music. She especially loved watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play ball. After her dedicated years of work, her true joy came from being a homemaker. Loving, taking care of, raising and supporting her family.

Mattie is survived by her daughters, Joy Edwards (Terry) and Pam Cook (Jeff): grandchildren, Mike Edwards (Amy), grandson-in-law, Terry Pendleton; Kayli Cassady (Shawn), Kasey Cook (fiancé, Zakery Arrowood); great-grandchildren, Alexandria, Shawn, Michael, Seth, Gracie, Madi, Madison; sisters, Edith Riles and Ruth Brittain (Bart); sisters-in-law, Gertie Smith and Nola Smith; pin-pal of 79 years from England, Joyce Rogers.

In addition to her parents, Mattie was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Vernon Poteat; son, Michael Poteat; granddaughter, Cindy Pendleton; siblings, Earl Smith (Bertha), Gerald Smith, Frances Smith Goins (Kirksey), Carrol Smith; brother-in-law, Bruce Riles.

The family will receive friends from 5pm until 7pm, Friday, March 7, 2025 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 2pm at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Denton and Dr. Jack Hodges officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
