Mattie Lou Pitts, 92, Glen Alpine, NC died Tuesday, January 6, 2015. Born in Burke County, NC on October 29, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Henry Bascom Pitts and Lillie Evans Pitts. Mattie worked at Full Fashion Hosiery Mill for over 55 years, Broughton Cafeteria, Blue Ridge Community Action-Generations and the Grandparents Program at J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center for thirteen years. She worked until the age of 88 when she reluctantly retired due to health reasons. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Glen Alpine.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers, Henry Odell Pitts, and Robert "Bob" Pitts; sister, Alice P. Abernathy and niece, Nancy Pitts Douglas.
Mattie is survived by nieces and nephews, whom she considered her children, Henry Abernathy, David Abernathy, Johnny Abernathy, Tim Abernathy and wife, Susan, Phillip Abernathy and wife, Beverly, all of Morganton, Doris Calamaris and husband Dean, of Albany, NY, James "Buddy" Pitts and wife, Deanna, of Ogden, UT, Charles Pitts and wife, Trudy, Andy Pitts and wife, Denise and Miles Pitts and wife Jean, all of Morganton. Mackie loved her family and cooking Sunday dinner after church for all the nephews and their families.
The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, January 11, 2015 at First Baptist Church of Glen Alpine with Rev. Donald Lovelace officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Alpine Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Glen Alpine, P.O. Box 557, Glen Alpine, NC 28628.
