Committal
Melvin Douglas Conley, 68, of Morganton went home to be with the Lord on Friday, December 20, 2019. Born in Burke County, NC on January 4, 1951, he was the son of the late Ervin Conley and Fannie Kincaid Conley. Melvin was a member and trustee of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He retired from Great Lakes Carbon and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and especially loved spending time with his family.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Melvin is survived by his wife of 48 years, Alder Jane Lattimore Conley of the home; daughters, Donna Conley Earley, Tojuana Conley Hemphill (Anthony Williamson), Starling “Missy” Conley Dula (Tracy Dula), and Betty Ann Johnson; sons, Rodney Conley and Terry “Bo” Hawkins; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sisters, Rebecca Bristol and Betty Largent; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by a brother, Ervin Conley, Jr.; and sisters, Linda Conley, Martha Conley Hunt, Maryland Corpening, and Annie Largent.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Thursday, December 26, 2019 at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the church with Rev. Albert Hillman officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
