Mercedes Rivas Mercado, 97, of Morganton, NC, died Monday, March 4, 2024.
Born in Puerto Rico on September 23, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Matias Rivas and Carmen Mercado.
Mercedes was a very strong woman who carved life out of a mountain. She was a hard worker and provided for her family by sewing. Mercedes took care of her family and was meticulous about her housekeeping.
She is survived by her children, Antonia Suarez, Angel Rafael, Jose Antonio, Edwin Suarez, Luz Nereida, and Feliz Suarez; and numerous extended family.
In addition to her parents, Mercedes was preceded in death by her husband, Antonio Suarez; and children, Juan Suarez, Migelina Suarez, Minerva Suarez, and Elman Suarez.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday, March 10, 2024 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 11, 2024 at Burke Memorial Park with Deacon Miguel Sebastian officiating.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
