Mildred Powell Suttles, 85, of Morganton went to her Heavenly home on Saturday, June 9, 2018. Born in Burke County, NC on June 12, 1932, she was the daughter of the late John Roosevelt Powell, Sr. and Vera Mae Coffey Powell. Mildred was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. She loved going to church, listening to gospel music, and spending time with her family. She retired from Tyler’s Restaurant and had worked at Shadowline.
Mildred is survived by her daughters, Brenda (Jerry) Campbell of Drexel, Gail (Johnny) Tillman of Lawndale, NC, and Sherry (Charlie) Killough of Lawndale; sons, Jay Howard Suttles of Salem and James Suttles of Morganton; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sisters, Susan McCoy, Dorothy Powell, and Myrtle Taylor; and her former husband, Darrel O. Suttles.
In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by a grandson, Chance Campbell; brothers, Vester and John R. Powell, Jr.; and sister, Grace Willis.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at Friendship Baptist Church (408 Church Street, Morganton). The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the church with Pastor Phil King officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
