Mr. Frederic A. Petrie

Mr. Frederic A. Petrie, Jr., longtime Morganton resident, passed away September 17, 2012 at the age of 86. Born to the late Frederic A. and Orvetta Fox Petrie on July 28, 1926 in Westport, CT, Mr. Petrie graduated from Staples High School and attended the University of Connecticut. Mr. Petrie enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. After the war he worked for Handy & Harmon and the Connecticut State Highway Department before starting a career spanning almost 40 years in the ladies garment industry. During that time Mr. Petrie managed plants in Mississippi and South Carolina before taking a position with Shadowline, Inc. in 1966, retiring as a Vice President in 1991.Mr. Petrie was an active sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, skeet shooting, tennis, and golf; and a devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves baseball and Tar Heel basketball teams. In his spare time he was an accomplished furniture maker and an active member of Grace Episcopal Church.Mr. Petrie was preceded in death by his first wife, Katherine O. Petrie; his son, Christopher W. Petrie; and his grandson, Andrew Howard.He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sarah L. Petrie, his children and step-children: Frederic A. Petrie III of San Diego, CA; Phillip D. Petrie and his wife, Stefanie, of Portland, OR; Elizabeth A. Petrie of Vancouver, WA; John Causby of Charlotte, NC and Suzanne Loven of Morganton, NC; two grandchildren: Justin L. Petrie of Henderson, NV and Sarah Ann Howard of Morganton, NC and three devoted great-grandchildren: Madison, Annalyse, and Avery Aycock.The family will receive friends Saturday from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center.
