Mrs. Nancy Gordon Hatcher, 81, of Morganton died peacefully at Grace Ridge on Friday, February 11, 2011. She was born in Mt. Airy, NC on January 28, 1930 and was a daughter of the late Thomas Preston Gordon and Minnie Chappel Gordon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Gordon. Nancy graduated in 1947 from Franklin High School and earned her degree as a registered nurse from Martin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Mt. Airy. Nancy married N. Clark Hatcher, Jr. on June 14, 1952, and they moved to Morganton in 1955.A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Nancy was a great cook and homemaker. She enjoyed playing bridge and was an avid tennis, basketball, and football sports enthusiast. As a member of First United Methodist Church, she was instrumental in forming the acolyte program, and her twin sons, Bruce and Philip, served as the first acolytes.Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Clark Hatcher; sons and their wives, Trey and Kathy Hatcher of Morganton, David and Beth Hatcher of Winston-Salem, Bruce and Dawn Hatcher of Raleigh, and Philip and Kelly Hatcher of Wilmington; grandchildren, Clark Hatcher, IV, Mary Katherine Hatcher, Elizabeth Hatcher, William Hatcher, Parker Hatcher, Leanna Hatcher, Dustin Hatcher, and Christian Hatcher; brothers and their wives, Gladson and Reba Gordon of Dobson and Buster and Alene Gordon of Mt. Airy; sister and her husband, Patricia and Arthur Beamer of Greensboro; her aunt, Mrs. Carol Wagnor of Dobson; a sister-in-law, Shirley Gordon of Rural Hall; and numerous nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 14, 2011, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Sydnor Thompson, III and Rev. Robert Roach officiating. Entombment of her ashes will be in the church columbarium. Following the service the family will receive friends in the fellowship hall. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church Capital Maintenance Fund, 200 N. King St., Morganton, NC 28655 or to a charity of one’s choice.
