Ned Winford LaFevers

Ned Winford LaFevers, 98, passed away on Wednesday, January 15 with family by his side. He was married to the late Doris Benfield LaFevers . He was a lifelong resident of Burke County and was residing at Grace Ridge Retirement Community. Ned served with the U.S. Army during WWII for over five years.  He was with the 300th Engineers Combat Battalions First and Third Armies with service in the European area.  He was a Sergeant Major with the rank of Master Sergeant and was the proud recipient of a Purple Heart and five battle stars.  Ned was employed by the Employment Security Commission of N.C. for 50 years.  He was the manager of the Morganton ESC office for 43 years, retiring on March 31, 1996.  Ned, who grew up in the Lake James area, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and writing poetry for friends and family.  He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Morganton, N.C.  Spending time with his family was his greatest joy.

Surviving are a daughter, Myra L. Liles and husband, Henry Liles, Jr.; son, Wade W. LaFevers; and granddaughter, Lauren Hillary Liles.

Ned was preceded in death by his parents James Henderson LaFevers and Della Giles LaFevers, bothers Clyde, Roy, Ralph, Jack, Guy, Robert and a sister Eva LaFevers Lonon.

The family will receive friends from 1:00pm to 2:00pm, Sunday, January 19, 2020 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center.  The funeral will be held at 2:00pm in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Dana McKim officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Alpine Cemetery. Military Honors provided by the NC National Guard.
