Nellie Louise Poteat, 85, of Hickory, NC went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 27, 2023.
Born in Caldwell County, NC on January 7, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Carl Bentley and Alice Knight Bentley.
Nellie was a member of Central Methodist Church in Florence, SC. She was a hard-working woman who loved Christmas and the color red. She enjoyed cooking and doing yard work, and she loved her dogs.
Nellie is survived by her children, Barbara Pennell Hollar, Alfred Pennell, Phyllis Walters, Diane Robinson, and Freddie Pennell; grandchildren, Rebekah Watson, Tim Crump, Joe Pennell, Michael Pennell, Emily Pennell, April Robinson, and Jennifer Robinson; fifteen great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to her parents, Nellie was preceded in death by a brother, James Bentley.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, July 30, 2023 at Burke Memorial Park with Pastor Brad Browning officiating.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

We here at Central UMC were so incredibly sad to hear of the passing of Nellie. She had such a servant’s heart, and was such a loyal friend. I was fortunate to have known her. Thank you for sharing her with our church family.
