Nina Belle Lane Hogan, 89, of Morganton, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2019 at College Pines Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. A native of Burke County, she was the daughter of the late Edward Benson Lane, Sr., and Angie Lee Hawkins Lane.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her high school sweetheart and husband, Harry Drewe , “Corky” Hogan and siblings, Edward B. Lane, Jr. (Betty), and Richard Neal Lane.
Surviving to honor her and remember her faith in God and her love of community are daughters, Martha Hogan Jump of the home (Rick) and Linda Hogan Snell (Tom) of Fletcher; loving granddaughters, Katelyn and Ivy Jump and Lauren Matthews (Josh) of Oak Ridge. Also surviving are her sister, Mary Lane Bradley (Bob) and nieces, Debra and Kim Bradley, Mary Bradley Ayers, Angela Wilkinson, and Edie Crook.
Nina was well known as a teacher of children, serving at one time as a substitute teacher in Morganton City Schools, and as a longtime Sunday school teacher of kindergarten children at North Morganton United Methodist Church. She played the piano for services many years ago and taught Vacation Bible School, along with being an annual delegate to the Western North Carolina Annual Methodist Conferences and the United Methodist Women’s each September.
She had strong beliefs in community service, all the while meeting the needs of her family. Whether it was being a grademother at school, president of the Morganton Pilot Club, member of the Board of the Morganton Community House, or a Girl Scout leader, she was always willing to step forth and participate.
In addition to these and other projects, she worked as Sears Roebuck, Inc.’s youngest credit manager, later becoming a long-time receptionist for Doctor’s Hamer and Lindquist.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 27 at North Morganton United Methodist Church at 2:00 followed by a gathering of friends in the church fellowship hall. Private graveside rites will be held for the family and close friends on Saturday, October 26 at Forest Hill Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staffs of Blue Ridge Community Action Adult Day Care, College Pines Nursing Center, and the Sticht Center for Geriatric Studies at Baptist Hospital for their guidance and care of “Ms. Nina”.
In lieu of floral tributes, memorials may be made to the Children’s Ministry at North Morganton United Methodist Church, 990 Sanford Drive, Morganton, NC or your local Alzheimer’s support group.
