Nollie "Buddy" Smawley, 76, of Scott Rd., Morganton, NC died Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at his residence following a period of declining health. He was born July 2, 1932 in Cleveland County, NC, and was a son of the late Dewitt Talmadge Smawley and Cola Lea Allen Smawley. Mr. Smawley served with the U. S. Army 82nd Airborne Division in Korea. Nollie was a member of Bible Missionary Baptist Church where he served as an usher. He dearly loved his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters.Surviving are his wife, Mary Horne Smawley of the home; a son, Michael Smawley of Maryland; a daughter, Debra Rawlings and her husband, Bobby of Maryland; a step-daughter, Kathy Thomas and her husband, David of Morganton; step-sons and their wives, Daniel and Sara Norris and Timothy and Tammy Norris all of Morganton; a brother, Zane Smawley of Valdese; grandchildren, Ashley, Katie, Jason, and Ryan; three great grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren; and five step-great grandchildren.The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 10, 2008 at Bible Missionary Baptist Church with the Reverends Ricky Watkins and Robert Vance officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the church. At other times the family will be at Mr. Smawley’s home, 4640 Scott Rd. Memorial gifts may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
