Norman Eugene “Gene” Smith, 69, of Connelly Springs, NC, fought the good fight and finished his race on Saturday, March 26, 2022. Born in Caldwell County, NC on August 8, 1952, he was the son of the late Florence Smith.
Gene was a proud veteran of the United States Army 82nd Airborne Division and also served in the Lenoir National Guard and Civil Air Patrol in Hickory, NC. Gene was the head usher at Drexel First Church of God for many years and attended CCC&TI, where he obtained CDLs in 2011. He loved mowing the grass and repairing lawnmowers, visiting daily with Jerry and CJ Curtis at East Burke Auto Service, and was passionate about helping others, while doing so with a servant’s heart.
Gene is survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Audrey Griffin Smith; daughter, Jessica Smith Frady; sons, Micah Smith (Stephanie) and Ian Smith (Jennifer); and grandchildren, Aeden and Sagan Smith. Also left behind to forever love him are his furry friends, Genie, Tigger, and many strays.
A private family celebration of Gene’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Burke County Friends for Animals.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
