Otis C. Thompson

Otis C. Thompson, 71, of Morganton, NC went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at College Pines Nursing Center following a period of declining health. Born in Cherokee Co., NC on March 3, 1940, he was the son of the late Columbus Stephenson Thompson and Bertha Greene Thompson. Otis was a member of Nowlings Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. An avid outdoorsman, he loved coon hunting and watching NASCAR and boxing.Otis is survived by his wife, Catherine Jordan Thompson of the home; daughters, Rebecca Thompson Smith and husband, Jeff, of Morganton, Rachel Thompson Proffitt and husband, David, of Valdese, and Joy Thompson Benton and husband, Shane, of Morganton; a step-son, Ronnie Lee Walker and wife, Sandra, of Valdese; a step-daughter, Cathy Walker Crisp of Hickory; grandchildren, Madison Smith, Jacob Coffey, Jocelyn Benton, Shannon Griffiths, Ashlee Walker, Chrisopher Crisp, and Dillan Crisp; a great-grandchild, Zachary Martins; brother, David Thompson of Glen Alpine, and Willis Thompson of Aurora, OH; sisters, Ira Mae Moss (his twin sister) of Murphy, NC, Arzella Clark of Morganton, and Ruth Brown of Morganton; a number of nephews and nieces; and his much-loved, adorable, furry, feline companion, Bebe.In addition to his parents, Otis was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at Nowlings Chapel Free Will Baptist Church with Reverends Darvy Hensley and Tim McFatter officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center where the body will remain until placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour.
