Pearl Roper Walker Thomas, 73 of Drexel died Friday, August 15, 2014. God called an Angel to Heaven. Born in Burke County, NC on May 1, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Robert Wesley Roper and Mary Lou Courtney Roper. Pearl worked for a number of years at Drexel Furniture and later at Young Ages and was a loving caregiver to her quadriplegic son, Michael for over 32 years. She was a member at Burkemont Baptist Church.
Pearl is survived by a son, Michael Walker, of the home; daughters, Deborah Hendrick, of Morganton, and Carol McMahan, of the home; grandchildren, James Daniel Bristol of Morganton, Michael Gavin Smith of Hickory, and Cody James McMahan of Gulf Breeze, FL; great-grandchildren, Gannon and Serenity Bristol and Peyton and Kelynn Smith; brothers, Charles Roper and wife, Tam, of Melbourne, FL and Ralph Roper and wife, Rochelle, of Taylorsville, NC; sister, Ruby Buff, of Morganton; and a great number of nieces and nephews all of whom was her favorite.
In addition to her parents, Pearl was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Allen Thomas; her first husband, Sterling Freeman Walker; and a brother, James Robert Roper.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 18, 2014 at Burkemont Baptist Church with Rev. Eddy Bunton officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the home on Woodlea Drive.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Michael D. Walker Trust, c/o Burkemont Baptist Church, 4668 Burkemont Rd., Morganton, NC 28655.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
