Peggy Craig of Smokey Creek Road, Lenoir, NC passed away on Sunday, August 16th in the 72nd year of her age. She was the daughter of the late Pearl and Ambrose Winebarger, and sister to the late Lynne Greene, Rick Winebarger, and Phyllis Stoots. She has one living brother, Larry Winebarger, who lives in Lenoir. She was also preceded in death by her son, Shannon Tris Craig.
Peggy was retired from the Morganton Department of Public Safety where she worked from 1991 – 2010 as a Training Coordinator and Administrative Manager.
As part of her commitment to making a difference in the lives of others, Peggy put herself into action. She was a volunteer and fierce supporter of the Special Olympics in North Carolina. Her devotion to SONC meant lots of work, hugs, smiles, and love were to be shared, with others, and she did so with zeal and enthusiasm.
She also believed that one of the greatest honors she could perform was to serve those who were transitioning to palliative and hospice care. She volunteered over a number of years at Hospice of Caldwell County. Her courage, strength, and devotion to serve those who were assigned to her was amazing. She felt it was her mission to serve others who needed it most.
Peggy leaves behind her son, Ronnie Craig, his wife, Joanne Craig, and grandchildren, Billy, Ben, and Emily Craig of Huntersville, NC.
She also leaves behind a number of outstanding men and women at the Morganton Department of Public Safety, whom she considered her “extended family.” She loved her work and the wonderful people at MDPS. She remained proud of their devotion to duty and their commitment to protect and serve the citizens of Morganton and Burke County in both fire and law enforcement.
A Memorial and Thoughtful Discussion to honor her life and memory will be held on Saturday, 19 September 2015 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory. A receiving of friends will be held at 10:00 a.m. followed by the service at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations in any amount be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital: 800-805-5856 or [email protected]. She was devout in her giving to St. Jude. They have hospitals throughout the country who treat and care for children and their families at no cost.
