Rachel Towery Murray, 82, of Valdese, NC, went to her heavenly home on Thursday, August 8, 2024.

Born in Cleveland County, NC on April 2, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Carrie Ada Towery. Rachel was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church. She had worked at Robinson Hosiery and Alba Waldensian. Mrs. Murray loved gardening, crotchet, watching football, and watching wrestling.

Rachel is survived by her daughters, Deborah Murray King, Bobbie Murray Brank (Robert), and Tami Lynn Bryan; grandchildren, Melissa Joy King, Martha Annette Carswell, Dewey Lee Jolley, Jr. (Lindy), Randy Lynn Stillwell, Jr. (Cierra), Brian Smith, and Felicia Smith; fourteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sister, Colleen Towery Cooke (Ronald); and companion and caregiver later in life, Jacob Marquez, and his family.

In addition to her mother, Rachel was preceded in death by her husband, James William Murray; daughter, Wanda Ann Murray Smith; granddaughter, Sirena Ann Johnson; brother, Ray Towery; and sisters, Betty Williams, Patsy Paulin Dennie, and Lorine Wellman.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m., Sunday, August 11, 2024 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Bob Dockery officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Breast Cancer Foundation, (abcf.org).

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Rachel was my childhood friend and cousin. Our lives took us in different directions, but we still kept in touch over the years. I have always loved her and will miss her very much.

Rachel touched our lives with profund spiritual joy. She shared herself with our family in such deep love, that made it natural to consider her our family. We will miss her love and smiles. We have memorable moments we shared with her and will tresaure them. We are sure that we will see her in heaven when out Heavenly Father calls us home as he did with Rachel.
