Rama Ruth Watts Mills, 89, of Morganton, NC died Saturday, September 5, 2015 following a period of declining health. She was the daughter of the late D. Mills Watts and Sarah Hester Prewitt Watts.
Ms. Mills attended Morganton City Schools, and during World War II, she worked in war production in Akron, OH and Norfolk, VA. She was employed almost 18 years at Henredon Furniture Industries. Rama later returned to school and graduated from Western Piedmont Community College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then went to work for the Catawba County Department of Social Services. While working there for eleven years, she was awarded a plaque as the first Catawba County Employee of the Year.
Ms. Mills was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school, served as a care visitor to church members who were shut-ins and in nursing homes and hospitals, and worked in other capacities at the church.
Rama is survived by a daughter, Rama Dianne Mills of Lenoir, NC; a son, V. Edwin Mills, Jr. of Cocoa Beach, FL; a grandson, Brian Jason Mills and two great-grandsons, Killian and Logan Mills, all of Florida; a sister, Bettijoe Watts Harbison of Morganton; and a large number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Rama was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Edwin Mills, Sr.; three sisters, Beulah Mae Watts Allen, Sarah Edna Watts Piercy, and Melva Juanita Watts Hyder; and three brothers, Henry Edison Watts, Harold Dennis Watts, and Bobby Mills Watts.
The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Calvary Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mary Miller-Zurell and Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the church. Memorial gifts may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church, 119 N.
