Raymond Howard Saunders, 88, of Morganton died Sunday, January 4, 2015. Mr. Saunders was born January 15, 1926 in Burke County to the late Charles Henry Saunders and Gracie Mae Bollinger Saunders.
He was a member of Denton's Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. Saunders was a manager in the furniture industry for over 40 years. After his retirement from Broyhill Furniture he remained very active in the business world, founding the Quality Lubes, 74-Bypass Flea Market and 321 Marina. He finally retired again at the age of 86.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Lotis Marie Banner Saunders; and his siblings, Eula Saunders, Catherine Brown, Odas Saunders, Lucy Hollifield, and Clarence "Buddy" Saunders.
Mr. Saunders is survived by his children, Jimmy Saunders and wife, Margaret of Hickory, Rama Kay Hensley of Morganton, Kenneth "Colonel" Saunders of Morganton, and Norma Jean Saunders of Sherrill's Ford; grandchildren, Tara Mode and husband, William, Steven Chandler and wife, Dana, and Bobbitt Kai Miller and husband, Joe; great-grandchildren, Gracie Mode and Rhensley Miller; and special family friend, Glenda Sparks.
A celebration of Mr. Saunder's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Denton's Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brad Thompson and Rev. Donald Lovelace officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Denton's Chapel United Methodist Church, 5358 Denton's Chapel Rd., Morganton, NC 28655.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
