Raymond Ivan Poteat, 84, of Conley Rd., Morganton, NC died Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at his residence following a period of declining health. He was born May 20, 1922 in Burke County, NC, and was a son of the late Fred Poteat and Rosa Landreau Poteat. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Floyd, Harold, and Hubert "Rass" Poteat; and sisters, Ruby Poteat and Irene Christian. He was a US Merchant Marine veteran, and served during World War II. Raymond was a retired employee of J. A. Jones Construction in Charlotte.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Arlene Browning Poteat of the home; a sister, Sadie Cuthbertson of Morganton; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 27, 2006 at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Reverends Joseph Browning and Darren Browning officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 7:30 pm at Sossoman Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the church thirty minutes before the funeral hour.
