Committal
Robert Baia, age 88, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2019. Born in Framingham, Massachusetts on December 16, 1930 to Antonio and Myra Baia. He began his career in industry as a tool and dye maker for G.E. Thirty years later, he pursued another career path, this time for investments and financial management with Wheat, First Securities Inc. in Morganton. In what became the most gratifying aspect of his working life, he continued in the investment business with subsequent companies for another 35 years. Upon his death, he was still considered a part of the Wells Fargo Advisors Team, serving as the senior vice president investment officer for the branch.
In addition to his dedication to the work he loved, Bob was an active community member. He served on several charitable boards, including Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Burke County United Way, and the Burke County Chamber of Commerce. He also belonged to the local Kiwanis Club for many years. He firmly believed in giving back to the community he had adopted as home.
Above all, he valued his family and friends. He loved his work, but he credited his passion and drive to the people he surrounded himself with. He and his wife, Alice Baia, were soon to celebrate their 68th wedding anniversary on February 22.
Bob is survived by his loving wife Alice, three daughters, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
A service will be held in memoriam at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 23, at St. Mary’s and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, followed by visitation and a reception at the church parish hall. All who wish to pay their respects and celebrate Bob’s life are welcome to attend both the service and/or following reception.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care or St. Mary’s and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
