Robert Eugene “Bob” Powell

Robert Eugene “Bob” Powell, 85, of the Oak Hill community died Tuesday, August 12, 2014. He was born in Burke County, NC on October 14, 1928 and was a son of the late Lewis Albert Powell and Lessie Anna Whisnant Powell. Bob was a man of many loves, the first being his Lord and Savior. He was devoted to his family and friends and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He loved to cook and was widely known throughout Burke County for his homemade sausage, his sausage gravy, and his banana pudding. Bob was a man with a generous heart who loved to help those in need. Bob was an ordained deacon, a man of integrity and faith, and a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church,

Bob is survived by his wife of 66 years, Huse Clark Powell of the home; his children and their spouses, Amelia “Millie” and Steve Shuffler, Robert “Randy” and Susie Powell all of Morganton, and Rodney Lewis and Jeanne Powell of Parksley, VA; grandchildren, Gloria McGinnis, C. J. Shuffler and wife, Karen, Stephanie Mills and husband, Steven, and Eric Powell and wife, Cristina; siblings, Mildred Powell, Nell Cuthbertson and husband, Dick, Ruby Carswell, Edwin Powell and wife, Jane; and Ralph Jackson Powell, Colonel (Ret.) U.S. Army and wife, Julie; 12 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by siblings, Albert Powell, Ethel McGee, and Sara Freeman.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 16, 2014 at Oak Hill United Methodist Church with the Reverends David Lawrence and Mark Denton officiating. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Oak Hill United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2239 NC 181, Morganton, NC 28655 or to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
