Robert “Herb” Gibbs, 91, of Morganton, NC, found peace with the love of his life in the early hours of Monday, May 27, 2024.

Born in Burke County, NC on July 6, 1932, he was the son of the late Wade Hampton Gibbs and Lillie McCall Gibbs.

Herb was a jack of all trades, from soldier to furniture sales. He was an avid tennis player, and his buddies called him “Coach.”

Herb was preceded in death by his bride of 66 years, Norma; daughter, Tammy; son, Robert; son-in-law, Sherrill; grandson, Dillon; and all his brothers and sisters.

His legacy lives on through his granddaughter, Jennifer and husband, Dustin; great-grandchildren, Chloe, Will, and Leyton; many nieces and nephews; and plenty of friends.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday, June 2, 2024 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The graveside service will follow at 3:15 p.m. in Forest Hill Cemetery with Rev. Dana McKim officiating. Military honors will be provided by the NC National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

I cherish many fond memories of friendship with Herb over 25+ years of playing tennis with him. He was a great doubles partner and worthy opponent who was generous and perceptive in his futile efforts to teach me to play the game as well as he did. He was perceptive in his observations of events and people, and I appreciated his sharing those with me. May he rest in peace.

—Jim Favell

Family and friends, "Coach" says it all for me. I learned so many life lessons through the friendship and camaraderie that Herb provided on and off the tennis courts. He certainly taught me about humility and sportsmanship through the years. I was that younger guy who thought I could beat him in tennis. To win against him was a rarity. He took his wins without boasting. He had a sincerity of heart that just seemed to flow naturally from his soul. His end-of-game handshakes were sincere and comforting. For me "coach" is a legend that I loved and respected. He has earned his heavenly wings. Thank you "coach" for those years of letting your light shine through our shared faith and hope in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
