Robert L. "Joe" Lewis

Robert L. "Joe" Lewis, 71, of Washboard Lane in Morganton died Monday, April 16, 2007 at his residence. He was born Jan. 8, 1936 in Edgecombe County, NC, and was a son of the late Ervin and Kate Harold Lewis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Paul "Boots" Lewis. Joe was a US Navy veteran of the Korean War, and served on the USS Wise. He was a devoted Christian and a member of New Beginnings Church. Joe loved the outdoors and was talented in many areas, especially auto repairs.

He is survived by his wife, Paulette Farmer Lewis of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Dean Smith of Morganton; a grandson, Robert Dean Smith of Morganton; brothers, William Earl Lewis and wife, Linda of Micahville, NC, David Lewis and wife, Addie, of Tarboro, NC, Sidney Lewis and wife, Tracy, of New Hampshire; sisters, Josephine Tolson and husband, Richard of Fayetteville, NC, Addie Suggs and husband, Jimmy, and Ann Harold, all of Tarboro; and Joe’s mother-in-law, Mary Farmer of Pinetops, NC.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 19, 2007 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with the Reverends Bob Deviney, David Orders, and William Earl Lewis officiating. Military rites will be performed by the American Legion Post #234 of Valdese. Burial will follow at South Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 until 8:30 pm at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Sharon and Dean Smith, 1109 Windy Acres, Morganton.
