Robert L. Powell

Robert L. Powell, 92, of Morganton, NC died Monday, April 7, 2014. Born in Burke County, NC on March 17, 1922, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Powell and Mary Etta Watts Powell. Robert was a member of the Morganton Church of God. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, having participated in the D-Day landing at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Robert earned five bronze battle stars. He worked as a service manager at Bernard Buick in Hickory until his retirement in 1984 and was an avid fisherman and gardener.Robert is survived by his son, Dennis L. Powell and his wife, Lynda, of Morganton; a daughter, Judy Powell Gray of Morganton; grandchildren, Robert Powell and his wife, Jennifer, Karen Smith and her husband, Ben, Wesley Powell, Cody Powell and his wife, Kimberleigh, and Rev. Jeff Davis and his wife, Stephanie; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Kelly, and Courtney Davis, Samantha Smith, Tyler Smith, and Gage, Kelsey, Colton, and Kinsley Powell; a brother, Charles Powell of South Carolina; sisters, Mary Bailey of Morganton, Ethel Pearson of Lenoir, NC, Louise Owens of Morganton, and Verlie Lambert of Morganton; and a number of nephews and nieces.In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Gallion Powell; a granddaughter, Cindy Davis; a great-granddaughter, Hannah Smith; brothers, Edward, Tillman, J.C., and Darryl Powell; and a sister, Ann Williams.The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, April 10, 2014 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center with the Rev. Jeff Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.
