Robert "Rob" Walker, 87, of Morganton, NC died Friday, September 23, 2011 at Autumn Care of Drexel. Born in Burke County, NC on March 7, 1924, he was the son of the late Pink Walker and Tessie Smith Walker. Rob was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was stationed in Europe and the Pacific as an MP, and he saw action in the Philippines and New Guinea. Rob has worked as a cattle farmer since he returned from the war in 1946. He was an active member of South Mountain Baptist Church.Rob is survived by his daughter-in-law, Rebecca "Becky" Walker of Morganton; a grandson, Timothy Lee Walker of Morganton; brothers, Sterling Walker and Raymond Walker, both of Morganton; and sisters, Beulah William of Hickory, NC and Viola Walsh of Valdese, NC.In addition to his parents, Rob was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Mae Williams Walker; sons, Richard Lee Walker and Ronnie A. Walker; brothers, William A. Walker and Ed Walker; and a sister, Lessie Morrow.The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, September 26, 2011 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Reverends Chris Annas and Rocky Reese officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
