Roger Dale Smith

Roger Dale Smith, 66, of Morganton, NC passed away Monday, February 26, 2018.  Born in Haywood County, NC on August 17, 1951, he was the son of the late James Earl Smith and Martha Wilda Brown Smith.  Roger was a member of James Chapel Baptist Church and retired from Great Lakes Carbon.

He loved the outdoors.  Fishing, hunting, and racing were his favorite pastimes.  Roger’s front porch was a place where you could find him on a warm day, whittling or chatting with friends.  His sense of humor was like no other.  He lived a life showing unconditional love to all his children, family, and friends.  Nothing was more important to him than “his girls.”  He will be truly missed.

Roger is survived by his daughters, Carey Smith Lowe and husband, Ed, and Kristie Smith, all of Morganton; grandchildren, Katlin and Courtney Smith; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Layla; girlfriend, Deborah Manis; brother, Charles Smith; and sisters, Dianne Poteat and Marlene Welch.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by a brother, Johnnie Smith.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 1, 2018 at Sossoman Funeral Home.  The family will also receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m., Friday, March 2 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 1949 Upper Crabtree Road, Clyde, NC 28721.  The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. in the church with the Rev. Jeff Moore officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
