Roger Davol Cannon, 85 passed away on Monday, March 16, 2009 at Grace Hospital. Mr. Cannon was born to Henry Fraser Cannon and Louise Lee Cannon in Montclair, NJ on September 9, 1923.He is survived by his wife, Joan LaPrade Cannon; two sons: Henry Fraser Cannon, II, and Vance LaPrade Cannon; a daughter, Lee Davol Miller; and seven grandchildren, all of Connecticut.Mr. Cannon was a resident of Grace Ridge in Morganton and, at the time of his death, was President of its Residents Association. For several years, he had been the representative to the Continuing Care Community of North Carolina, and was instrumental in effecting the first regionalization of the organization.He was a mechanical engineer, a member of Beta Theta Pi, and before retirement was Export Sales Manager of the Barden Corporation in Danbury, CT for whom he worked for more than 32 years.His volunteer activities in the more than 44 years he lived in Sherman, CT included service on town boards, with the Sherman Players, the Board of Trustees of Storm King School, and other organizations. In Danbury, he earned the nickname of "Mr. Junior Achievement" for his contributions over many years to that youth organization.He served on the International Advisory Board of the Union Trust Company, and was designated by Elliot Richardson, Secretary of Commerce as Chairman of the Connecticut District Export Council.A memorial service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20 in the Ervin Community Room at Grace Ridge, 500 Lenoir Road, Morganton.Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Ridge undesignated or to the Enhancement Fund, 500 Lenoir Rd., Morganton, NC 28655.
