Ron Poteat

Ron Poteat, 51, of US 70 East, Valdese, NC died Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Born on December 12, 1957 in McDowell County, NC, he was the son of the late Dean and Adell Davis Poteat. Ron graduated from McDowell High School. He attended Western Carolina University where he received his bachelor’s degree, and then received a Master’s Degree in higher learning with a minor in sociology from Appalachian State University. Ron taught cosmetology at McDowell Technical Community College for 15 years and at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute for 10 years. Ron and Mike were co-owners of Salon Professionals. Ron was also an avid gardener.Ron is survived by his partner of 21 years, Mike Smith of the home; a sister, Nina Elliot and husband, Dean, of Marion, NC; a sister-in-law, Wanda Poteat of Nebo, NC; nieces and nephews, Tim Mitchell, Cindy Beech and husband, Bill, Walt Mitchell, Melissa Davis and husband, Rick, Todd Williams and wife, Jodi, and Cindy Williams; a number of great-nieces and nephews, and his family at Salon Professionals.In addition to his parents, Ron was preceded in death by a brother, Doyle Poteat, and a niece, Sheila Burleson.The funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, August 9, 2009 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with David Stevenson officiating. Entombment will follow in Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the residence, 2629 H-1, US 70 East, Valdese.
