Roxie Elizabeth Coates

Roxie Elizabeth Coates, 92, of Morganton, NC went to heaven Monday, April 18, 2016 at her residence. She was born January 22, 1924 in Madison County to the late Floyd and Mae Jenkins Rice.
Roxie was a member of Nowlings Chapel Freewill Baptist Church of which she was the oldest member. She loved her church and her pastor, and attended faithfully until her health made it impossible for her to attend.
Roxie was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and a friend to everyone she met. She loved her children, especially her grandchildren. Roxie loved pretty flowers and working in her garden. She enjoyed sitting on the back porch reading her bible and listening to gospel music.
In addition to her parents, Roxie was preceded in death by her husband, Neal Coates; one daughter, Betty Jean Campbell; one son, Leonard Coates; two sisters, Gladys Carver and Robie Coates; and four brothers, Kermit, R.B., Porter, and Quentin Rice.
Roxie is survived by her four children, one son, Larry of the home; three daughters, Norma Hazel Norman and husband, James, Shirley Davis and husband, Charles, and Lucille Cannon and husband, Rudy. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Chuck Davis and wife, Melissa, Amy Chapman and husband Derik, Travis Poarch and wife, Lisa, Daphne Davis and husband, Matt, and Courtney Motley and husband, Chris; eight great-grandchildren, Lauren Chapman, Dalton Chapman, Lawson Davis, MM1 Tyler Davis, Malachi Poarch, Bradon Poarch, Landon Motley, and Matthew Davis; one great-great-granddaughter, Emma Kate Davis; and one sister, Zula Griffin.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., Thursday, April 21, 2016 at Nowlings Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. The funeral service will be 4:00 p.m., Thursday, April 21 in the church with Rev. Darvy Hensley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
