Roy "Sat" Roper, 79, of Rhoney Road, Morganton, NC, died unexpectedly Sunday, December 25, 2005 at his residence. Born January 1, 1926 in Burke County, NC, he was a son of the late Stanley Roscoe Roper and Mattie Saunders Roper. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Louise Smith Roper, a brother; Charles Roper; and a sister, Pearl Saunders. Sat worked at Great Lakes Carbon, and retired from Valdese General Hospital’s maintenance department. During his later years, he worked part-time at Parker Industries. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, and a member of the Valdese American Legion Post #234.
Sat is survived by his son, Michael Roper, of Morganton; daughters, Susan Propst and husband, Johnny, and Dawn Roper, all of Morganton; a sister, Inez Kirby and husband, Herschel, of Gamewell, NC; a grandson, P.F.C. Jeffrey Kendall Powell and wife, Brittney, of Fort Riley, KS; a great-granddaughter, Bayleigh Powell; a special friend, Johanna O’Brien; and a number of nieces and a nephew.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 28, 2005 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Huffman officiating. Burial will follow in Gibb’s Chapel Wesleyan Church Cemetery with graveside rites to be performed by Valdese American Legion Post #234. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence of the son, Michael Roper, on Causby Road, Morganton.
