Committal
Roy Thomas Waters, Sr., 86, of the Salem Community, Morganton passed away Sunday, November 3, 2019. Born in Buncombe County, NC on May 8, 1933, he was the son of the late Albert Ernest Waters and Annie Bowman Waters. Roy was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. He was a teacher and coach at Salem High School for many years and was inducted into the Burke County Sports Hall of Fame. He also worked for WMNC Radio, was a journalist for the Morganton News Herald, and was founder and owner of Waters Insurance. He enjoyed golfing and traveling, and Roy never met a stranger.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Mr. Waters is survived by his children, Julia Waters Sims (Jeff) and Chip Waters (Terri); grandchildren, Travis Sims, Brett Sims-Mikesell (Kyle), and Joey Waters; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Greta Clark Waters; and brothers, Max Waters and J. B. Waters.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. The memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. in the church with Mr. Tommy Sain officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
