Ruth Hewell Shaffer

Ruth Hewell Shaffer, 93, of Morganton, NC passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2016. She was born in Newton County, GA on October 13, 1922 and was the daughter of the late Dabney Decalb Hewell and Fannie Belle Morrow Hewell. Ruth was an active member of the Senior Citizens Club in Morganton. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and the Eastern Star in GA. Ruth was a devoted mother and grandmother. She loved traveling, sewing, and spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her dogs. Ruth was a member of First Baptist Church in Morganton.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Thomas Shaffer, Sr.; son, Earl Thomas Shaffer, Jr.; son-in-law, Jr. Lee Johnson; two brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by daughters, Ruth Louise Johnson Wideman and spouse, Alton, of Lufkin, TX; Linda Shaffer Satey of Morganton, son-in-law, Phil Satey of Edgewater, FL; daughter-in-law, Muriel Shaffer Murphy of Tarpon Spring, FL; grandchildren, Sandy Anderson and spouse, Pete, Jason West and spouse, Moira, Lee Johnson and spouse, Wendy, Trey Shaffer and spouse, Larry Dias, Lisa Edwards and spouse, Chris, and Nick Satey and spouse, J. Leigh; fifteen great-grandchildren; and sister, Francis Polson of St. Pete, FL.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 - 2 p.m., Sunday, August 28, 2016 in the Parlor of First Baptist Church.  A memorial service will follow in the church chapel at 2 p.m. with Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating.
