S. J. Griffith

S. J. Griffith, 77, died Thursday, May 25, 2017 at his residence. Mr. Griffith was born in Avery County on February 25, 1940 to the late Seth Griffith and Beatrice Hughes Griffith.
Mr. Griffith was a member of Mountain Grove United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a hardworking and generous man. During his life he worked as an electrical lineman for both the City of Morganton and the town of Drexel. He is a lifetime member of Burke County Rescue Squad where he was a former chief.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Griffith was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Lequire Griffith; brothers, Jerry and Frank Hughes; and sisters, Eula Wiseman, Trula Calloway, and Edna Lusk.
Mr. Griffith is survived by his children, Rhonda Petersen and husband, Chris, and Steve Griffith and wife, Rebecca all of Morganton. He is also survived by grandchildren, Gregory Griffith, Emily Petersen, Kendall Griffith, and Bryce Griffith.
The family will receive friends from 4 – 6 p.m., Saturday, May 27 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, at Mountain Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Neil Brantley and Rev. Kathleen McAbee officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to Mountain Grove UMC, 3625 Fish Hatchery Road, Morganton, NC 28655.
