Sharon Powell Whisnant, 80, of Morganton, NC passed away on Friday, August 30, 2024. She was born on June 25, 1944 in Burke County to the late Harold Powell and Gladys Glasbrook Powell Rhoney. She was a very spiritual person, a musician and artist. She wrote her own poems. She was a loving person and loved her Sunday lunches at her son, Tony’s house. She also loved her animals, her cat, Smokey and her dog, Princess as well as all animals.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, Jessie Rhoney; son, Derrick Hawkins; brother, Jerry Powell; and husband, Harley Whisnant.

She is survived by her children, Tony Hawkins (Leslie), Roxie Edmisten and Rita Tallent; grandchildren, Greg Evans, Tabitha Hawkins, Casey Smith, Miranda Carpenter, Chelsea Walker, Harley Tallent, Layla Tallent and Ella Williams; great-grandchildren, Nathan Poovey, Alivia Carpenter, Makenzie Carpenter, Steven Strickland, Jr., Brayden Hawkins and Tailynn Hawkins.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Sharon at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Sharon would prefer donations to be made to Burke County Friends for Animals.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
