Sherry Council Overton, 51, of Morganton, passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Monday, April 6 at home with her loving family.
Sherry was born March 10, 1964 in Hertford County to John and Shirley Council. She was a longtime resident of Morganton where she lived since leaving her home in Jackson, North Carolina in 1972. She graduated from Freedom High School in 1982, and went on to earn an Associate's Degree in Nursing at Western Piedmont Community College. Due to a courageous but lengthy battle with cancer, she retired from Broughton Hospital with 27 years and 9 months of dedicated service.
Sherry was a kind-hearted, selfless woman who always put her family first; and never hesitated to help those that she loved and cared for in any way that she could. She was fun-loving, genuine, and loved to make others smile. She touched the lives of all who met her - family, friends, and coworkers.
She will be missed daily by those that love her. We take great comfort in the knowledge that our Heavenly Father wrapped His loving arms around Sherry at her Homecoming, and that she now has a new pain-free body in Christ.
She is survived by her parents, John and Shirley; one son of the home, Joseph Jai Overton; one sister, Sheila Council; a nephew, Travis Merrill; a second nephew, Bradley Merrill and his significant other, Amber Morgan; one niece, Shelby Merrill Holbrook and her husband Trey; two great nephews, Finley Holbrook and John Reid Merrill; and many, many others that were blessed by her presence in their lives.
She is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Joe and Lucille Byrum of Northampton County and her paternal grandparents, Lester and Bertha Council of Halifax County.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 9, 2015 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center with Rev. Rocky Reese and Chaplain Larry Cronk officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of graveside flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690 to whom the family wishes to extend their gratitude for their support in her final days.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Rest now, Beautiful Angel.........
