Shirley Lail Detter

Shirley Lail Detter, 80 of Hickory, NC died Thursday, February 23, 2017. She was born in Burke County, NC on August 31, 1936 and was the daughter of the late Ernest Willie Lail and Dessie Belle Cook Lail. Shirley was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and mother-in-law. She loved gospel music, her church and traveling.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Cleatus Detter; brothers, James Odell Lail and David Ray Lail; sisters, Beatrice Mull and Aleen Lail Fredell.
Shirley is survived by son, Tony Detter and his wife, Brenda; grandsons, Matthew Bowlin of Hickory and Brandon Detter of the home; step-grandchildren, Chad Holland of Marion and Ashely Holland of Morganton; brothers, Earnest Hoover Lail of Connelly Springs, Garland Edward Lail of Hickory, and Eugene Lail of Kings Mountain; sisters, Marilyn Shook of Claremont and Alberta Crawley of Morganton; a number of nieces and nephews; and pallbearers, Chad Holland, Steve Rowe, Ray Lail, Allen Lail, Kenny Davis and Scott Dula.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Shady Grove Baptist Church. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, February 26, 2017 at Smart’s Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Lewis and Pastor Billy Mace officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Shady Grove Building Fund, 6021 NC 18, Morganton, NC 28655.
